Today our team is excited to share the news that Good Work Foundation (GWF) has been named the Regional Award Winner (Africa) at the Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Awards 2018, which took place in Philadelphia on 4 and 5 December. GWF also received a silver award in the ‘Arts and Humanities’ category. Both awards were in recognition of our Open Learning Academy.
We are extremely proud of our year-on-year progress. One year ago GWF was runner-up in the ‘Hybrid Learning’ category. Today we are coming home with two awards, one of them being top honours for an African project that is reimagining education.
We would like to once again thank the Mpumalanga Department of Education for their ongoing support of this programme. We would also like to acknowledge our Open Learning Academy programme funders: Londolozi Game Reserve, The Leap Foundation, Rhino Africa, Rand Water Foundation, the All Heart Fund, Investec, Konica Minolta South Africa, Zonke Monitoring Systems, Charities Unlimited, the Westphal family and Majik Foundation, Ofri Kahlon, Susan Strauss, and Louis & Nerina van Niekerk.
About the Open Learning Academy
The Open Learning Academy is a low-cost, enquiry-based model of education for rural communities that arranges children into self-organised digital learning sessions. Young adults, recruited from the local community, are trained to be able to facilitate these offline learning sessions in which the children, aged from four to 16 years old, explore predominantly English, mathematics and conservation-focused learning using free, game-based apps. The model is now operational at the Hazyview, Justicia and Huntington Digital Learning Campuses in Mpumalanga province and the Philippolis Digital Learning Campus in the Free State province and a combined 22 schools participate in the programme. About Reimagine Education
In 2014, QS Quacquarelli Symonds entered into a partnership with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania to launch the first global competition designed to identify the most innovative, novel approaches to higher education. Reimagine Education aims to acknowledge and reward those most successful in creating transformational educational initiatives, enhancing student learning outcomes and/or employability.
